Inspired by their love of Mediterranean travel but with deep Texas roots, our clients sought to build an urban retreat on a busy neighborhood corner. The location posed a design challenge in maintaining privacy and creating the feeling of an oasis.
In response, the home incorporates a series of low masonry walls and pocket gardens to filter the street chaos before entering. Each window placement was considered, gradually transitioning from the outside world to the private interior realm, allowing light to filter in.
A sunken courtyard was created to act as a natural buffer from the busy street by setting the home low. A series of staggered windows on the second level activate the facade and provide direct views of the vista.
Each material, from the hand-chipped limestone walls and wooden beam ceilings to the natural stone throughout, was selected to enhance the feeling of the natural world.
